Please don’t stop the music! It soothes the mind and the nerves. Nowadays, music plays an important role in clinical treatment and has also become the “hit” therapy in spas. Professionals have thus recognised and approved the music therapy program. Just like there are various musical notes, the music therapy can be of different forms and bring benefits in tremendous ways. Let’s now go back in time and study its origins.

History
Music therapy has been in existence for a long time. In Greek mythology, Apollo was the god of music and medicine. Aesculapius, another Greek god of medicine, was said to heal diseases of the mind by means of songs and music. Plato, Aristotle and Hippocrates also acknowledged music effects on the mind and soul. Egyptians equally made use of music therapy. For the Hebrews, music therapy was mentioned in biblical times when David played harp for King Saul. After World War I and World War II, musicians of all types went in hospitals to play for the injured soldiers. The doctors and nurses noticed that the music played was indeed helping the patients to recover from their injuries and trauma. Thus, as time flew by, music has convinced all nations about its curing purposes and soothing effects.

Music and medicine
This could be an alternative to medication. Music therapy has always triggered the interest of great scientists and has been subject to profound studies. According to Dr. V.A, general practitioner, music has tremendous positive effects on health: “It has been scientifically proven that music impacts positively on the human psychic. Moreover, music acts as an anti-stress and anti-depressant. It relieves and boosts self-confidence which makes one feel better. Besides its relaxing properties, music improves our daily life by encouraging us. Some lyrics make our day and bring solutions to our confused situations. Music therapy is highly favoured and recommended in case the patient is suffering from psychological disorders or if the latter is psychiatrically disturbed. In the cases of people diagnosed with cancer, music therapy can be of very great benefits to them. It also applies for pregnant women.” Dr. V.A points out that women are very receptive to music therapy, especially those in late pregnancy. “Music helps in soothing them. After giving birth, some melodies are played to create a warm atmosphere in the room for both the mother and new born. Usually, the types of music used by the specialists are soft with natural sounds, such as chirping of birds as background,” states the doctor.

The new trend in spas
Some spas have adopted the trend of music therapy in another style… Doing body massage with a music in the background is a way to relax. The I Spa Fitness and Wellness Club proposes this melodious massage. “The music played is very soft during the massage. The specialist adapts the movements according to the sounds of music. This massage is effective since it helps the customer to relax quickly and slows down the heartbeat and has an impact on the physique. The music used also acts directly on the brain. Therefore, the combination of music and massage will have both psychological and physical benefits,” advocates the Spa Manager at the I Spa Fitness and Wellness Club. So why not give music therapy a try and adopt this trend? You will perhaps find relief if ever you are tensed or stressed.

Music Therapy : an aid for autism

Music is becoming the main treatment used in autism therapy. This is because it can stimulate both hemispheres of the brain. In other words, the therapist can play a song or instrument thereby supporting the cognitive activity, building up self-awareness and improving social interactions. Thus, music therapy is highly favoured in the case of autism, since it encourages communicative behaviour, which is something that autistic children have great difficulty with. This therapy helps these children in bonding first with the object and then to others who interact with their instruments.
