27-year old Glorine is a graduate in banking and financial services from Université des Mascareignes and Université de Limoges. Her mission and vision in life is to contribute towards poverty eradication and eliminate youth unemployment. She believes that poverty eradication is a common concern for all of us. “We should not be ignorant and should therefore start thinking about ways to help reduce poverty. We should be willing to help in healing the world to make it a better place, with equal opportunities for all,” she says.

One incident that moved her dates back to the time when she was teaching and one of her students could not afford to buy a pencil and eraser and each week, he used to borrow from his friend. “I could not remain indifferent about this action; I went to enquire about it. I was terribly hurt in a certain way while learning that his parents do not work. Then I realise that poverty leads to disturbance in proper education. I wake up everyday with a fear of seeing some of our younger ones facing hardship in lives. As from that day, I firmly decided that we should not turn away our eyes towards poverty. Education is certainly the greatest weapon to bridge poverty and thus, I am projecting to integrate education further in society by 2019,” she narrates.

Setting up of a common platform

Glorine wants to set up a common platform that could help children having problems academically, especially those who are poor, with assistance from volunteer teachers. Her second initiative is to create a group approach between youth and employers. “Youth unemployment is in fact making things worse for youngsters to achieve their ambitions. The number of unemployed youths, especially graduates, is huge. It is obviously a financial disaster faced by various countries around the world. Using NGO Youth Sceal as a platform, I will be highlighting difficulties faced by unemployed graduates.”

She is a volunteer for the NGO Youth Sceal and her role stands to head hunt and give opportunities to youths to relate on their good and bad experiences in life. “My recent project on the implementation of my blog ‘Youth Ambassadors’ is a proof of my aspiration to guide, help and discuss with young people. Having 251 members registered since its introduction on 16 February 2017 on Facebook, many positive reactions are being noted among them. The principal objective of this advent is to sensitise youth on personal, professional developments as well as social and political achievements. Messages, posts and success of youth in Mauritius are being shared just to encourage other youths to further develop their talents and values.”

Happy in Africa

The young lady is currently working hard to realise her dream for being selected ambassador of the international periodical ‘Happy in Africa’. “I have recently worked on an article for the periodical ‘Happy in Africa’, and waiting for it to be released soon. At the same time, I am enthusiastic to share my views on Mauritius to the whole world by highlighting the frontline achievements of some youths.”

Talking about her inspiration, she says: “Apart from being a young activist, I want to be a financial analyst in banking or financial sectors. The universe of banking and finance has always attracted my attention. This is the very reason for my choice of career after having graduated in banking and financial services. I strongly believe that patience and hard work will bear fruits. My second aim is to be given an opportunity to participate in the financial advancement of my country, through volunteering in other NGOs having a common objective: that of serving our motherland.”

She believes that there are lots of changes that should be brought among our youth. “Youngsters nowadays should not be afraid to take positive and challenging engagements for social advancement. They should be filled with an unbeatable enthusiasm to make positive changes in our society, as they are the future vessels, decision makers and directors of our country. They should feel the ease of having a peaceful, united and colourful island, where poverty is vanquished and youth unemployment is eliminated. We should worry and care about the betterment of our country.”
