Dr Alok Sharma: “Stem Cell Treatment is a ray of hope for many”

Dr Alok Sharma explained how Stem Cell Treatment can help patients with neurological disorders such as autism, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, mental retardation, spinal cord injury and stroke. “Stem cell treatment has proven to be a ray of hope for conditions which were commonly thought as incurable. Although full recovery is not attained, through a multidisciplinary approach, the symptoms of these conditions can be relieved and improve the quality of life patients,” he explained.

For example, patients with cerebral palsy, who previously could not walk at all, underwent stem cell therapy, and after weeks of rehabilitation, they were able to walk with the help assistive devices.  During treatment, doctors use adult stem cells derived from the patient’s own bone marrow, as they are the safest and most feasible type of cells. There are no major ethical and moral issues involved in the use of these cells.

He underlined that since every patient is different; their treatment protocol is customized according to the patient’s requirement. For more information on the NeuroGen Brain and Spine Institute, contact the Global Rainbow Foundation.
