An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 on the Richter scale was recorded 297 kilometers east of Rodrigues shortly after midnight, more precisely around 12:10 am on Thursday 9th August. Earthquakes are legions in places where there is a separation of two tectonic plates. We cannot predict such phenomena,” explained Avinash Dookhee, forecaster at Vacoas weather station on Radio Plus. Seismic activities in this part of the Indian Ocean have occurred lately. As recently as Tuesday 7th August, an earthquake of 2.5 magnitude on the Richter scale was felt in northern part of Reunion Island.
