Reforms in the Criminal Justice System by 2019

The Attorney General, Maneesh Gobin, announced during the parliamentary sessions that there will be reforms to the Criminal Justice System. These reforms aim at amending the Criminal Code concerning sexual offences.

“Appropriate amendments will also be brought to the Criminal Procedure Act, the District and Intermediate Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act and other relevant legislations to ensure that victims of sexual offences may give evidence in a better context than at present. The amendments will also bring about certain changes aiming at fairer criminal justice norms in line with our present day circumstances,” he said.

He revealed that the amendments will be introduced towards the end of this year or at latest, at the beginning of the legislative calendar 2019.
