Chinatown: A cultural and traditional heritage

One of the most famous towns of the island – Chinatown will welcome you with arms wide open and warm up your heart with its convivial atmosphere. Strolling in the streets with the busy shops and grocery stores selling a variety of items, smelling and tasting the delicious foods, hearing the traditional music and echoes of clatter of mah jong tiles – you will definitely feel yourself immersed in the Chinese culture. From Saturday 7th May till Sunday night, the streets were teeming with people who came from across the island to enjoy the well-known Chinatown Food and Cultural Festival. The Chinese culture was at honour and was celebrated at its best. Traditional Chinese foods and snacks like noodles, dumplings, paow, Moon-cake and so on were on the menu. In the streets or in restaurants, visitors had the chance to have a bite of the mouth watering and fine Chinese food which is anchored in Mauritian gastronomy. Between the cracking of firecrackers, the lion and dragon dance, cultural and music shows, martial arts demonstrations, street arts performances, Chinese games – the visitor were taken on a colourful trip to China. But whether its day or night, a stroll through Royal Street is worth it, as you get to know the Chinese culture and its wonderful traditions instilled in multi-cultural Mauritius.
