Labour Party: Arvin Boolell to swap constituencies

The leadership of the Labour Party, which is already thinking of the next elections, wants to swap its next candidates in the different constituencies. Arvin Boolell could move from No. 11 (Old Grand-Port / Rose-Belle) to No. 18 (Belle-Rose / Quatre-Bornes). No formal decision has been taken. It would seem, however, that the Labour Party leadership is seriously considering moving Arvin Boolell for the upcoming legislative elections.

"It's a riding that matches his profile. The result of the general elections of 2014 is a serious indication that he must leave No. 11,” explains a cadre of the Labour politbureau. Several members of the party have advised the former foreign minister to go to No 18. On Tuesday, he remained elusive on the issue. Arvin Boolell said that no decision had been taken to this effect. Saying that he will "have a say in this matter", he nevertheless states that the decision will be collective.

He confirms, however, that Labour does suffer from a lack of presence in certain constituencies. "I am called to fill these absences," he said before adding that as the party organizer, he must ensure that he is present on several levels.

The former Minister of Foreign Affairs is also aware that more than one hopes that he will be a candidate in constituencies other than No. 18. "It is with great humility that I take note of all this. I believe that the party will have to put all its chances on its side to the next legislative, aligning good candidates. "

According to another source within the party, if Arvin Boolell is transferred to No. 18, he will be the running mate of the former finance minister Rama Sithanen in the next legislative elections. "A formula that is considered saleable at the next election," said another member of the executive.

Legislative elections

Since he joined politics in 1987, Arvin Boolell always stood as candidate in constituency no 11. He topped the list of elected MPs the very first time and did same in 1991 and 1995. However, he had to settle for second place in 2000, when he was beaten by Pravind Jugnauth. Arvin Boolell was elected at the top of the list in 2005 and 2010. He would not have that same chance in the 2014 legislative elections, getting fourth place.
