An Uphill Battle

122,700 Mauritians are affected by poverty. For a small country like Mauritius with around 1,286,240 inhabitants, it is alarming. The global agenda today is creating an inclusive world. Alone, the Government policies cannot create social inclusion. There is need for greater participation from all sectors to reach those left furthest behind and overcoming poverty in all its dimensions. How can we achieve greater social inclusion by enabling people from all walks of life to come together to respect the human rights and dignity of people living in poverty?

What turns Them into Illegal Migrants?

The Tracking Team of the Passport and Immigration Office has over the past few weeks arrested several foreign nationals who have been illegally staying in the country. Among them, Bangladeshi and Indian workers and Malagasy visitors. The workers have left their employers since long and were working illegally while the visitors have overstayed while being on tourist visa. The trend of Illegal stayers is a growing phenomenon. Jens Erik Kjeldsen, 63-years-old and Dorthe Hegelund Kieldsen, 66, are a native couple of Groenland who have set out on a long adventure at sea in their boat Kigdlua, meaning the burning fire. They have sailed to around forty countries, including a long stop-over in Mauritius since four months now.
