MAMA JAZ – The much awaited jazz festival

The show dates for second edition of MAMA JAZ were revealed in a press conference on Wednesday 1st March at the Le Saint Georges Hotel, Port Louis. Indeed, from April 1st to May 1st, Mauritius will host the 54 activities of this unique festival, with 70 international and Mauritian artists, 16 Workshops, 36 music sessions, including 23 free and 13 paying, and a forum.

The 10 concerts will be taking place on five Saturdays and five Sundays in the month of April, from 8 pm to 9.30 pm, at the Francis Thomé auditorium of the François-Mitterrand National Music Conservatory and the MAMA After-Parties, Night Cases and NEPETALAKTON. Mauritians will be able to enjoy free and open air shows on Sundays on the beach of Villas Caroline in Flic en Flac. On April 30th the event will take place from dawn to end at midnight.

MAMA JAZ’s vision is based on the values of the International Jazz Day, established by UNESCO in 2012, and extended to for this grand festival will be The Trio Earl-Han Lee of South Korea, Charles X of the United States, Boyana Walsh of Bulgaria and Zero db of England. 

Jerry Léonide, co-founder of MAMA JAZ is the winner of numerous solo piano competitions, including that of the Montreux Festival in 2013, based in Paris and Jhonny Joseph. He will arrive from China to host some of the workshops, but above all will inaugurate the first creations concocted for the festival. Among the Mauritian artists, there will be the highly creative High on Five with Dean Nookadu, at its head, the quintet of Philippe Thomas and Neshen Teeroovendadum among others.

DJs will also be present among Electrococaine, Music Kabinet, ILL MO and Think Loud will bring their magic as much as they can to the Barabar, Villas Caroline, Flying Dodo and Jam’in. Gavin Poonoosamy, co-founder, in collaboration with the National Conservatory, DAMOO, DB VISION, MAK ACOUSTICS, VILLAS CAROLINE and IMMEDIA, wishes to perpetuate this event which is above all a platform for transmission and exchange around music. This festival is in fact providing a forum where the various players in the profession can express themselves, practise and radiate on a professional and international level while being connected to the public.

It should be noted that MAMA JAZ is one of the only Jazz festivals organised during a whole month in the world.

Tickets for the festival are for sale on Rezo Otayo 466 99 99 from Rs 400 for a concert and up to Rs 2000 for multiple entry packages.
