Alexandra Falls: Beauty in all its splendour

Situated some 700m above sea level, the Alexandra Falls is one of the most popular nature sites in Mauritius. Located in the Black River Georges National Park, a visit to Mother Nature’s heritage is a must for all.

You must have definitely seen many of its pictures on postcards or in videos venting the beauty of Mauritius. Alexandra Falls is indeed one of the most emblematic and popular sites of the island. Famous not only for its breathtaking beauty, Alexandra Falls also offers visitors the chance to live a unique experience with nature.

Part of the Black River Georges, the Alexandra Falls is accessible when you are going to Plaine Champagne and heading towards Grand Bassin. Just look out for the sign post of the Alexandra Falls Viewpoint. Once you are there, you will find a large parking area with refreshment sellers.

Once you get out of the car and get set to have a look at the spectacular view, you can already feel a fresh breeze brushing against your skin a sense of well-being. As you cross a charming little path, where with the shadows of trees acting as a protective umbrella. You will find picnic tables where you can enjoy lunch or snack break with you family and friends. If you are lucky enough, you might also get welcome greetings from monkeys. 

Along the way, you will cross a bridge where a calm little river flows. Then just a couple of stairs and you will get to the viewpoint. Overall, the whole process to the panorama will take you just five minutes. Once you are there, do not miss the chance to admire and capture on your camera the panoramic view of the South-East Coast with its turquoise ocean. If you want to take in the full view, you can climb up a wooden platform. 

Alexandra Falls

On your right is the Alexandra Falls. From where you are, the waterfall looks like a silent white stream cascading over the rocky outcrops. You will also have a plunging look on Mauritius’s virgin green valley which is home to many endemic avian species and flora. You will need nothing more to soothe the eye. 

During your visit, you might be able to find delicious ripe ‘goyave de chine’ if it’s the season. If you want to have a tranquil moment away from the crowd, on your way back, after the little bridge, turn to your right and you will see a small river. After crossing it, you will accede to a path where you can have a nice stroll. However, be careful if you have children. But what we can tell you is that the music of the woods will definitely lift up your spirit.
