A natural sanctuary with high symbolic value about the resistance to slavery, Le Morne Brabant has for many years fascinated all. The majestic mountain which was classified as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008 has been officially opened to the public since July 24. Since access has been granted to the public, the natural fortress and monument has been welcoming thousands of local as well as foreign visitors.
The 3.5 kilometres of trail offers spectacular views on the turquoise sea of the south western coast. As you start the ascent, you will pass through a pathway full of gigantic trees. You will feel the coolness of the atmosphere as you walk under the shadows of the tress. However, gradually, as you start climbing higher and higher, the path will get a little bit rough and you might already feel the fatigue in your legs. This is why it is recommended to stay hydrated, especially children, during the entire trail.
All through the journey to the peak, you will be mesmerised in front of the spectacular view on the Morne Peninsula surrounded by Mauritius’ best beaches. During the trail, you will notice that the giant basaltic rock peak is dotted with caves which once harboured runaway slaves. As you pave your way, the vegetation and oxygen will lessen. It will be important for you to wear hats and caps to protect yourself from the scorching sun. Reaching nearly half way, you will have to climb a rocky hill with ropes provided by the authorities.
Difficult and hard indeed, you will however not be deceived once you reach the peak of the mountain. After more than one hour of walking and climbing, you will forget the pain in your legs and will be in awe in front of the magnificent view. You can seize the opportunity to have a nice little picnic before you start climbing down the mountain.
Known as the Le Morne Cultural Landscape, Le Morne Brabant Mountain is preserved and promoted as a historical, cultural, environmental and ecological site by Le Morne Heritage Trust Fund which operates under the aegis of the Ministry of Arts and Culture. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, the mountain was a retreat for slaves who escaped the control of their masters to seek refuge in the caves and slopes. Associated with the maroons, Le Morne is thus a symbol of the slaves’ fight for freedom, their suffering, and their sacrifice. The mountain is also a refuge to two rare plants, the Mandrinette and the Boucle d’Oreille. This is why it is crucial for all to act as responsible citizens and preserve this site.
