Vinesh Caumul and Melina Ramsamy-Caumul: The ingenious couple creating magic

Emerging from their imagination and delivering through their inventions, Vinesh & Melina prove that creativity has no limits. Their new business concept: designing & creation of beds based on customers’ tastes and preferences was born out of their collaborative fertile minds.

A couple of months back, Melina Ramsamy-Caumul, 26 years old, launched her online business Ultra Modern Bed and Sofa Collection. “After graduating in Fashion Technology, I had the choice to either join the fashion industry or to embrace a teaching career but with the coming of our child, my priorities changed. That’s when my husband Vinesh advised me to put my skills into practice and set up my own business. We then came up with this new and innovative concept that has been greatly appreciated by the locals,” she shares. Her first project was designing her own bedroom.

Melina further explains that at start, her marketing was mainly done by “word of mouth” and she  then started using Facebook to promote her innovative products. “Traditionally, beds have been always rectangular in shape and resting on four legs. We thought why not give a twist to this design and we came up with multi-shaped beds, for example round beds or curved beds with innovative bedside tables or simply beds fitted with LED strips.” 

The couple’s business priority remains customer satisfaction and close collaboration with clients. At times, clients even come up with their own designs and choice of materials.

Bed with led lights

Vinesh & Melina started their collection with a simple design but with a creative touch. With time and added efforts, she introduced other innovations such as beds equipped with led lights. Bed designing has been modernised at ‘Ultra Modern Bed and Sofa Collection’ through the gradual shift from simple designs to more complex ones. 

“Before manufacturing the bed, I usually do a replica in 3D which will give the customers an idea of the final product. While working on 3D, I thought of what I could add to enhance my creations. Then emerged the idea of integrating LED lights, which we thought will give a calm, cosy and romantic atmosphere to the bedroom. So we did one design and the client really appreciated it. The LED lights have 16 different colours and can be controlled via a remote. The intensity of the lights can be adjusted as per the taste of clients,” she reveals.

Melina believes that innovation is a must for every product and that’s why she came forward with personalised beds. “Nowadays, we have internet and people like to create their own designs. Recently, I came up with another innovative idea of using ‘inox’ bedside tables. Another interesting feature is, if parents are willing to create a replica of their bed for their children in smaller size, we can help them do it,” she says.

The young entrepreneurs believe in making products that are of good quality and at an affordable price. But they also deliver premium quality products depending on the client’s budget and choice of materials (e.g. upholstery material from Germany or Italy). “Our aim is to serve the public and our greatest reward is their satisfaction. We give real ‘value for money’ for the delivered products coupled with after-sales service and warranty. We do not leave room for customer complaints. We make tailored products for all budgets. A customer will never leave with bare hands,” they add.

Paving the way through the storm

For any new entrepreneur, the first step is never easy. But for Melina, it was more of a slow progress than a tough one. “Selling a new concept was a real challenge. The only hurdle was the initial supplier, who had difficulties in delivering products on time and to perfection. As the business was picking up, I was lucky to find a more dedicated one. I must vouch that our current supplier works in full collaboration and with utmost professionalism in delivering the products. It’s a mutually beneficial relationship that we strive towards over the long-term,” she states.

Another challenge is lack of skilled workers. In order to meet up with increasing demand, the couple are in constant need of skilled workers, especially for upholstery works. Future endeavours

Melina has a lot on her plate. She is among those ladies, who do not only dream but achieve it. She comes from a middle class family. Her late father, Pragassen Ramsamy, contributed enormously to make her what she is today and now it’s her turn to make him proud. He has always been her greatest motivator in life.

“Now that we have started our small online business, we wish to open an outlet in the future where our products will be displayed in 3D models. We will be focusing more on custom made beds and sofas. While conducting research, I discovered another passion, that of interior designs, which I will explore in future thus providing clients with a complete interior solutions,” she confides.
