Umarfarooq Omarjee: “Start from below to make your way to the top”

Young, dynamic and full of vision, Umarfarooq Omarjee is the third generation of the family to take the lead. He is currently the director Commercial and Development of Omarjee Holidays. We met this humble and passionate young man in his office at Curepipe. After completing his studies in Australia, Umarfarooq Omarjee decided to join the family business in Mauritius. “I had the choice to remain in Australia and seek opportunities there but then I decided to analyse the opportunities here. It was worth to stay back and join the family business as there were major developments taking place,” he shares. Many tend to believe that everything is easy when one joins a family business, but Umarfarooq believes otherwise. “It is wrong to believe that a family business is easy to handle. We have to create our own pathway. We start from below to make our way to the top. Everything is not as easy as it seems. We do not get all the facilities easily. We have to work hard,” he says. Today, the Omarjee business is being led by the second and third generations. “Even if the group has new blood, our seniors are still here as a guide. The elders are supervising us. There are differences in our opinions but there is always the possibility for discussions and sharing of our opinions. There are no conflicts among us,” he states. An automobile lover As a teenager, Umarfarooq did not know really what he would be doing as such. He used to show interest in various fields like science and others. He was really interested in automobiles but that did not develop it further. When he was visiting foreign countries, he used to analyse the different prospects and opportunities that exist. “Somewhere, the idea of becoming a business person was always hidden in me.”

My dreams…

It has been three years already since Omarjee Holidays was launched. Being at the head of Omarjee Holidays, Umarfarooq advocates that there are many new developments and new possibilities to be exploited for the company. “We intend to be more innovative and bring the best deal for the Mauritian population. There is no doubt that the sector is very competitive and it is a challenge for us to bring the best,” he avers. According to the young businessman, a team that works together in harmony and that has a very good platform for sharing ideas will be able to face all the challenges that come their way. “Our dream is to be close to our customers. We offer personalised services to our clients and we will further strengthen this bond with them.” [[{"type":"media","view_mode":"media_large","fid":"21472","attributes":{"class":"media-image aligncenter wp-image-35748","typeof":"foaf:Image","style":"","width":"500","height":"246","alt":"Omarjee Holidays"}}]]

Aviation sector as a promising sector

Aviation is a vast and promising sector. This sector, he says, opens the door to employment for the youth in various positions across the sector and fields related to tourism. “Aviation sector generates jobs but it is a challenging field. Those who are motivated to work and show an interest in this field can make it big. Above all, you need patience.” He advises youngsters who are wholeheartedly willing to join this filed to do an internship first, as this will give them an idea what to expect in this field. He encourages the young generation to pursue their dreams and work in the fields they like the most. Umarfarooq has climbed the success ladder because of his patience, perseverance and hard work. “Young people should learn and improve while climbing the ladder of success. It is impossible to learn everything instantly. Everyone has the qualities to lead or open a business. One should not be afraid to take any initiative,” he advices.

Passion for football

Despite his tight schedule, with proper time management, this diehard fan of Manchester United can get some quality time for the week-end football matches. “Once or twice a month, I try to catch up with college friends for a football match. It is a moment to disconnect myself from work,” he adds. Exploring nature is another one of his passion. Umarfarooq often goes running in natural surroundings and for some fresh air.

Umarfarooq along with the Group are engaged in social activities. They sponsor various activities and collect funds for various causes. He tries his best to help in any way he can for different events. “We participate in various events and bring our contribution. We will continue to do so,” he says.
