The SEM Young Investors award was held on Wednesday at Octave Wiéhé Auditorium, Reduit. The finalists were awarded by the MCB. For this edition, Bel Air SSS topped the list followed by Sodnac SSS for the second and third prize.

Launched in 1993, the SEM Young Investor Award Competition (SEMYIA) is a national share market game, involving real market prices in real share market conditions, aimed at high school level. The participants face real share market conditions. At the end of the competition, the winners win a prize of Rs 200,000 to create a shared portfolio and opportunity to acquire experience in investment. Present at the award ceremony, the Minister of Good Governance and Financial Services Sudhir Sesungkur stated that he is very proud that the young generation is thinking beyond their studies and this will help them in their future.
Bel Air SSS topped the list
The Bel Air SSS comprised of Bheekun Bibi Huzeifah, Jokhoo Varsha, Aisha Gooljar, Seeteexsha Raoji and Goolvaden Bibi Shaheen. The girls were confident to win as they made a profit of 22.12% that is Rs 44,291.12. The team prepared in a very strategic and methodical manner. They searched for much information through the Internet concerning companies. Huzeifa and her team analysed factors such as “earnings per share, dividends per share paid, Net asset value and dividend yield before choosing which companies to invest in”.
The winning team also learnt that to succeed in share market, they needed direct access to the most accurate and timely information. It has been a pleasure for the girls to work together. They were helped by their Rector Mr Gooly and business teacher Mr Goonjar. They had the challenge to study the current economic situation in Mauritius, the prediction of its future as well as learn about the capital appreciation.
First runner up: Sodnac SSS
The team consisted of Seeteeram Riddhi, Gopaul Chikirsha, Cunniappen Amy, Takoordyal Hansita and Baijnath Meghna. They feel honoured to receive a prestigious award and feel grateful for this recognition. As a team, they have always tried to keep their focus to do their best and at the same time enjoyed those moments as a team. “We thought that it was more important and less stressful to do the project together. Working in a team allowed us to tap on the strength and balance out our weaknesses.”
Second runner up: Sodnac SSS
The second team of Sodnac SSS consisted of Dodhybul Khritisha, Chunnoo Tina, Maunick Nishita, Uljudah Awtamee and Augun Hansinee. During this competition, the young girls were able to learn lots of interesting things which will help them in their future. Although they were constantly discouraged to continue with the competition because of many factors, the team has stayed united and worked as one to achieve this result and are are very proud of themselves. “We became more familiar with many terms and words that can help us for our finals and made us improve a lot for questions based on the stock market.” Talking of the challenges, they stated that they had a hard time in completing the report as it was difficult to do the calculations. “We had also to allocate time on our project and balance it with our studies.”
Best Report Trophy
Out of 208 teams and individual certificates awarded, the Ebène Girls State Secondary School received the Best Report Trophy. The team consisted of Chung Tak Cheung Laureen, Lam Hon Wah Kimberly, Appadu Manupriya, Bhurosy Deepshika and Chan King Yeun Emmy. The girls believed that working together allowed them to win this trophy. “We followed training sessions at the Stock Exchange with respect to the functioning of stock market and carried out research work on stock exchange of Mauritius and overseas stock market. Responsibilities were also shared and each member was assigned specific tasks. At the end, the report was written under the guidance of their mentors.”
