Rs 100 million drug haul in Quatre Bornes

The Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU), led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Boyjoo, dismantled a drug trafficking network operating from Residences Kennedy, in Quatre Bornes on Wednesday night. Following a precise operation, police seized 5.6 kg of heroin with an estimated street value of Rs 100 million. Marie Nadia Samantha Chowrimoothoo, 24 years old, has also been arrested. Her husband is currently serving a 25 years’ imprisonment sentence for drug trafficking. It is to be noted that Curly Chowrimoothoo and his brother Steve were convicted in July 2014. In May 2011, they were arrested at Residences Kennedy in possession of two sachets of 61.7 and 52.37 grams of ‘brown sugar’ which they intended to resell. The drug was then valued at Rs 1 million. This operation of ADSU lasted for more than four hours and required the deployment of the National Coast Guard (NCG), as the drugs entered the borders of Mauritius through by the maritime route. The NCG was alerted about a possible transfer of the heroin packages to Pleasure Craft, Maggie Mai, in a canoe. The ADSU followed this possible operation and two people on board of the Maggie Mai have also been arrested. Two other suspects are being actively searched. The young lady appeared at the Rose Hill Court on Thursday. She has been taken into police custody after her appearance in the court.
