During discussions held, it was found out that following the major flash floods on 30 March 2013, which caused six deaths in the access tunnel to the complex, less people are visiting the Port Louis Waterfront. Thus, the renovation works will also have to increase people traffic to the Waterfront while also taking into consideration the future Metro Express.
Executives of the SPDC are looking at means of bypassing the access tunnels. Connecting points with the motorway could be an option. This project would necessitate the input and involvement of the private sector. In the grand scheme of things, the revamped Waterfront would be part of an urban boulevard which can be accessed from numerous points across the city. This new space would have pedestrian walkways and road access.
SPDC is looking for an additional ten ‘arpents’ of land to extend the Waterfront. Regarding the Rs 3 billion investment required, the State company will limit its share to around Rs 400 to Rs 450 million and the shortfall would be made up by the private sector.
