“New Port Louis” project: SLDC adopts participatory approach

As part of the project development ‘New Port Louis’, the State Land Development Company Ltd (SLDC) launched a series of consultations with various stakeholders. Construction professionals in Mauritius, experts in urban planning, the civil society in general, and more specifically, Port-Louis inhabitants are invited to participate in the Consultative Technical Committee for Port Louis. The purpose of this committee is to establish a genuine process of exchange and issue recommendations to improve the content and facilitate the deployment of this national project which will start in the second half of 2016. ‘New Port Louis’ has several objectives and aims to revitalize the capital both socially and economically. The implementation of this project led by the SLDC nevertheless depends on collaboration between the private and public sectors. “The primary objective of SLDC through the project ‘New Port Louis’ is to improve the quality of life of the capital’s residents. This is being done by thinking back intelligently about the spaces to make it more dynamic for city residents, and especially pedestrians. We believe that the opinions of all stakeholders in the city and even the country will have a real and positive impact on the project,” said Claude So Wong, CEO of SLDC.

About ‘New Port Louis’ project

The ‘New Port Louis’ project will enable a revitalization of economic, cultural and social activities of the capital. This will preserve the historical sites but also amplify their potential in terms of experience and human capital. Residents and users of Port Louis will benefit from more opportunities to exercise their rights to the city via a facilitated mobility, pedestrian roads and enriching calendar activities. The mission and vision of this project are based in particular on three key criteria which are “heal, boost and celebrate.”
