New competition by the English Speaking Union: “Find the Appropriate Word” for Form V students"

Find the Appropriate Word is the new competition launched by the English Speaking Union. Form V students of the Royal College of Curepipe are the winners of this first edition. As reading is the last item on the scale, the English Speaking Union (ESU) launched a brand new competition. Entitled ‘Find the appropriate word’, the competition aims at helping students to create rich vocabulary instead of consciously building indigenous one as well as enriching their spelling. Indeed the main objective of the competition is to create a vocabulary cultured young generation. Initiated by Darmalingum Veeraragoo, ESU member, the competition targets From V students. They are divided in teams of three and are given the meaning of a word. However, the world is deliberately written in a distorted form. Participants then have to rearrange the alphabets to get the appropriate word in 60 seconds. For example: An accident in which two vehicles or people crash into each other. Inappropriate Word: I N O L O C I L S Appropriate Word: C O L L I S I O N Launched in April, students had two months training in order to take part in the competition which was scheduled for June. A total of 65 schools expressed interest in taking part in the competition. However, for this first edition, the ESU had targeted only 32 schools. A draw was therefore held. Four schools were qualified for the semi-finals namely: Royal College Curepipe v/s Forest Side SSS (Girls) and Royal College Port Louis v/s St Andrews College. Both the semi-finals and the finals took place on 14th June at St Esprit College, Quatre Bornes. The Royal College of Curepipe won over the Royal College of Port Louis during the finals. The winning team comprised of: Yardan Jumoorty (Captai), Khooshav Bundhoo, Rayyan Valaydon and Kelvin Appadoo. All semi-finalists, runners-up and winners received prizes from the ESU. On the same occasion, Mr Prem Burton (the outgoing ESU president) delivered a farewell speech to students, teachers and ESU members. “ESU has run numerous activities over the years for our young students. We are pleased to have now been able to embark Form V students in this competition. Indeed, achievements through competitions can leave great imprints in your life!” The new ESU president is Mrs Marie-France Roussety. She was appointed at the last executive meeting of 6th June 2016. Mr Prem Burton will remain active as the Vice-President.
