Murder of Stacey Henrisson: Jayraz Sookur sentenced to 60 years of prison

The Prosecution, represented by State Counsel Mehdi Manrakhan, requested on Thursday at the Assize Court during the closing arguments on the sentence of Jayraz Sookur, the maximum penalty of 60 years imprisonnement. Defence Counsel Avineshwar Dayal, requested that his client be inflicted with a sentence not exceeding 20 years in prison. However, the maximum sentence of 60 years behind bars was held against the murderer in the afternoon. Earlier, members of the jury found him guilty by a majority of seven against two on Friday 5 February. . Consequently, Jayraz Sookur was convicted of the murder of Stacey Henrisson, his step-daughter. The 50-year old pleaded not guilty at his trial on Tuesday 12 January. However, Police Chief Inspector Jean Claude Vally testified in Court that during the debates calling for the provisional release of Jayraz Sookur, the latter admitted killing his step-daughter on 12 May 2012 before giving three different versions of events to the police. The body of Stacey Henrisson, who inherited a fortune from her biological father, was found in a plastic bag in the forest. It is thought that she was murdered because of the money. During the trial, it was revealed that Sookur tried to sell a bungalow belonging to the girl even though he had no legal rights to do so.
