The competition started on Facebook inviting participants to capture ‘The moment’ between a mother and her child. They were invited to participate and to give their best and memorable photos. The 30 best pictures among many entries received were exhibited at the Caudan Waterfront during the three days of the event. The most important part of the exhibition was mainly to raise money for an Obstetric Intensive Care Unit whose cost is approximately Rs 4 million rupees.

As Karl Lagerfeld once said: “What I like about photographs is that they capture a moment that’s gone forever, impossible to reproduce!” Each photography was an art that each beholder could interpret… in their own way. The Caudan Waterfront was in a festive mood, presenting the public the beginning of life…the beginning of an adventure of a child. Caring smiles, blissful moments and showered with so much love... These are the moments that these photographers showed through their photos. They captured the special moment between a mother and her child.

Nishta Jooty, president of the Rotary Club of Vacoas explains that the funding of the intensive care unit for pregnant ladies (Obstetric Intensive Care Unit) will be equipped with the necessary facility to tackle high risk pregnancy. It will provide most importantly improved access to good reproductive health services. Postnatal care for mothers will also be a MUST. Moreover, the mother will not be the only one to benefit from the advantages, relatives and staffs will also enjoy the comfort. This first OICU in Mauritius may thus decrease maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity. This initiative will also help in investing a better medical service and seek a better treatment for mothers to be.

Members of the public present there were invited to vote for the best picture. The voting exercise is still ongoing through Facebook. The most liked and voted picture designated as the Best Picture will win a prize. Finally, calendars will be made with the photos and the money collected will be used to give birth to the first Obstetric Intensive Care Unit in Mauritius.
