Since its establishment in 2010, Middlesex University Mauritius has fully embraced its ambition to create positive change and make a difference to Mauritian society, businesses and the wider world. Middlesex University decided to do something extra special this year by introducing five new scholarships.

The first three that have been awarded are full scholarships for undergraduate students; an Access Scholarship for students from a financially disadvantaged background who showed excellent academic potential; a Community Scholarship for students who have been either engaged in the local community by volunteering or have been a successful role model in their school or college and a Sports Scholarship for students who have been competing at regional or national level in sports.
After a strong competition, the Scholarships were awarded to the following successful applicants for undergraduate programmes: Yelina Sanjeevi (Accounting and Finance), Marie-Agnes Melanie Cateaux (Psychology with Counselling Skills) and Sandya Carpen (Psychology with Counselling Skills).

One scholarship will be awarded for each of their five Masters programmes: the LLM International Business Law, MSc Applied Psychology, MSc Management, MSc Computer Networks and Network Designs and MSc Business Information Systems Management. To be eligible, the students must have a first class pass for their first degree. Finally, the remaining scholarship is a Lucky Draw Scholarship available to one lucky international student applying for any undergraduate programme or the International Foundation Programme. The prize will be one full year tuition fees paid.
Graduation ceremony
Middlesex University Mauritius Branch Campus held its sixth Graduation Ceremony at the J&J Auditorium, Phoenix. The ceremony honoured more than 300 graduates who were awarded their degrees. The graduates have studied diverse academic programmes on the Mauritius campus.
Middlesex University Mauritius continues to grow with over 950 full-time students and over 300 new graduates. This success is due to the dedication and hard work of the whole staff team and the enthusiasm and commitment of the students. It is also a result of the continual search for relevant new programmes for Mauritius and the region, this year the university successfully launched two new much awaited masters, one in Business Management and one in Applied Psychology, a first for Mauritius and strengthens the growing awareness of mental health issues in the region.
The Campus Director, Dr Karen Pettit, delivered the commencement address to the graduates and an audience of more than 600 family, friends and community members. She proudly highlighted that Middlesex University is now ranked among the 150 young universities in the world and commended the staffs and students for their active community participation and volunteering.
Dr Karen Pettit also emphasised the comprehensive employability service that supports students in finding work experience and developing their employability skills. “We are committed to supporting all students to source, access and secure a job when they graduate and to enable students to develop the skills to be highly effective in a graduate job. This vision is realised through a collaborative approach; working together with employers to ensure that our courses reflect their needs and that internship opportunities are available to give a flavour of real life.”
The Vice-Chancellor of Middlesex University London, Professor Tim Blackman, also congratulated the graduates for joining the over 150,000 successful international alumni of Middlesex University. Professor Blackman highlighted that “Middlesex is about transforming potential into success. We see potential in every one of our students and that is why so many go on to achieving incredible things in business and the professions.” He was delighted to confirm that the construction works for the new campus, in Flic-en-Flac, are almost complete.
Each year, the University awards honorary degrees in recognition of those who make an outstanding contribution in their field. On this occasion, His Excellency Mr Jonathan Drew MBE, British High Commissioner, was honoured for his achievements. Mr. Drew congratulated all the graduates on their success and encouraged them to follow their dreams.
Creative Hustle by British Council
British artist Michael Pinsky, Curator Stephanie Delcroix and Mauritian artist Gaël Froget led a Creative Hustle in Mauritius in early August, with 22 young Mauritian artists. The room was buzzing with creativity and passion from talented individuals in various fields including, visual arts, performance arts, digital arts and writing.
It was a two-hour session where Michael and Stephanie engage with young artists, ideally aged between 18 and 25 (up to 35). The aim of the event was to:
• Inspire young Mauritian artists
• Support existing links between these artists and potentially between the artists and the UK
• Discuss each other’s work and possible collaborations
• Explore collaborations that could take place end of 2017/2018 as well as a longer term vision
Michael and Stephanie talked about their work and collaborations with other artists and scientists and the key issues that have enabled them to get to where they are now. They led a discussion with the young artists. As part of the session, they were happy to look at the young artists CVs and portfolios and provided reviews as well as gave them advice.
