Majority MP Fowdar criticises government

It is rather uncommon in Mauritian politics for a backbencher to speak up against the ruling coalition. Majority MP Sangeet Fowdar has this week, during an interview on Radio Plus, criticised some Ministers, whom he did not name for their inaction. He also levelled criticisms against his leader, Ivan Collendavelloo, regarding the quest for a strategic partner for the CWA. The MP states that it would be better for the country to look for competencies rather than give away the handling of our water resources to foreign entities. The strategic partnership with Dubai Ports World with a 99-year lease was a bit too much. The secretary general of the Muvman Liberater, Eddy Boissezon, was quick at calling the shots against the rebellious backbencher whose outburst he termed as being “unacceptable.” Following this declaration, Sangeet Fowdar stated that he sticks by what he previously said. The MP will have to explain himself to the party next Wednesday. Speaking to Radio Plus, Mr Collendavelloo said he was surprised by the outburst of MP Fowdar. “I do not really understand the reasons behind his outburst, but it is directed towards the ML. He is inconsistent. I would like him to provide some explanations,” he said. Before his radio interview, Fowdar met with the leader of the MSM, Pravind Jugnauth, without informing his own party. Note, both parties are in the ruling coalition. Also, while on air, Fowdar gave good marks to the Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the PMSD, Xavier-Luc Duval, claiming the latter was doing a good job. The PMSD has been actively strengthening its position on the ground.
