MINISTRY OF LAND TRANSPORT AND LIGHT RAIL
NATIONAL LAND TRANSPORT AUTHORITY
COMMUNIQUE

COVID 19-Special Arrangements for Renewal of Road Tax, Public Service Vehicle / Carrier Licence and Certificate of Fitness The public is being hereby informed that owners of vehicles whose Motor Vehicle Licence (Road Tax), Public Service Vehicle or Carrier Licence expired on 30 April 2020, would benefit from an automatic extension up to 30 June 2020. This automatic extension will, however, be subject to the vehicles having a valid insurance cover.

Upon renewal, the Motor Vehicle Licence, the Public Service Vehicle or Carrier Licence will be deemed to have taken effect as from the date of its expiry. The 50% surcharge on road tax, as provided by the Road Traffic Act, will not be imposed if payment is effected by 30 June 2020.

The public is being also notified that upon resumption of activities, only a limited number of customers would be admitted to the NLTA Counters on a daily basis to enable the physical distancing protocol to be observed. Owners of private vehicles are, therefore, strongly advised to renew and effect payment for their MVL on the Online Renewal of MVL platform to avoid unnecessary queueing up at the NLTA Cash Offices and Post Offices upon resumption of activities. No surcharge will be applicable to vehicle owners whose road tax expired on 30 April 2020 in case renewal and payment is made via the online platform up to 15 May 2020.

The public is reminded that, during the Curfew period, vehicles not having a valid Certificate of a Fitness, would be allowed on the road in exceptional circumstances only, that is, in case of a person holding a valid Work Permit Access delivered by the Commissioner of Police, a
medical emergency, or where a person has to shop for food items or necessities, and subject to the vehicles having a valid insurance cover.

Where a vehicle does have a valid Insurance Cover, the owner thereof is advised to contact
his/her insurance company for the renewal of the insurance policy.

As regards the fitness certificate of a vehicle which may have or will lapse during the Curfew
period, the vehicle owner should arrange to secure an early booking for the examination of the vehicle at an Authorised Vehicle Examination Station, upon resumption of activities.

The Ministry relies on the collaboration of the public during these testing times.
