News on Sunday has a look at the latest trends in interior and exterior designs as well as festive decorations.  It is a tradition in Mauritius to redo our homes at New Year. According to interior designer Shaima Khodabux, from Hodesco, home deco is now more colourful, graphic, natural and most importantly, functional. “It includes a walls painted in neutral colours, brightly coloured cushion and ethnic patterns along with a wicker pouffe, or tuffet, on a seagrass rug. Among the latest trends, we encounter a mix between different materials combining copper, waxed concrete and wood for an industrial style or armchairs upholstered with floral prints in front of a sanded drywall outlining its rough charm for a trendy effect,” she explains. Shaima Khodabux reveals that the most popular style remains the modern and contemporary style. “The time when deco was neglected, colors dull and insipid is now over. Nowadays everyone wants an interior which reflects his lifestyle, which is warm, bright and very often customizable with the new DIY trend,” she says. Commenting on the investment of home deco, she states “the budget is one of the main criteria when planning a project, it is often considered as a constraint, but we can use it in our favour to achieve our goal. Nowadays, there are several solutions to get our dream interior design without having to spend a fortune on it. The global offer for home decoration is vast and there is one for everyone’s taste and budget. Moreover, more and more people are using reusable objects, such as pallets or plastic bottles and choose home staging to refresh their interior.”

What is the trend?

According to interior designer Margot Masson from Core Design, the trend is industrial design. “People are more willing to adopt a simple spacious style with concrete walls, lightings not too processed. However, it all depends on the taste of people as well,” she explains.

Colour and fabric trend

CEO of Deco Design, Trinida Chetty, explains how to choose the best colour fabric for home decoration:
  • When choosing the fabric, feel free feel free to compare and touch the different parts. A beautiful fabric is not too soft; it is a bit stiff and pleasant to touch. Prefer tight knit fabrics for the seats and wall hangings while softer tissues will be more suited to curtains or cushions.
  • Think practical: The choice of materials is determined by the part concerned and its use, as well as colours. Another point to consider, resistance and ease of maintenance of the fabric. Finally, always take more tissue than necessary to avoid unpleasant surprises.
  • Be trendy and go for natural colours: This season, nature invites itself at home with shades which are very “organic”: coral green, passing by earth tones, cream and rust.
  • Printed side: the trend of large flowers and foliage print is back.
  • The Bohemian chic décor continues to be beautiful and well with numbers of ethnic inspiration. The deco is affirmed for some time and is still as popular.
  • The combination of red and blue persists this year.
  • Oriental prints for a dynamic pattern.
