Health : Mold disease

Mold toxicity falls under the larger category of biotoxin illness, also known as Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS).  Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) is “an acute and chronic, systemic inflammatory response acquired following exposure to the interior environment of a water-damaged building with resident toxigenic organisms, including, but not limited to fungi, bacteria, actinomycetes, and mycobacterium as well as inflammagens.” Molds produce irritating substances that may act as allergy-causing substances (allergens) in sensitive individuals.

SYMPTOMS:

  • Memory problems, brain fog, trouble with focus and executive function
  • Fatigue, weakness, post-exercise malaise and fatigue
  • Muscle cramping, aches and pains, joint pain without inflammatory arthritis, persistent nerve pain, “ice pick” pain
  • Numbness and tingling
  • Headache
  • Light sensitivity, red eyes, and/or blurred vision
  • Sinus problems, cough, shortness of breath, air hunger, asthma-like symptoms
  • Tremors
  • Vertigo
  • Persistent nerve pain
  • Abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhoea, appetite changes
  • Metallic taste
  • Weight gain despite sufficient effort (weight loss resistance)
  • Night sweats or other problems with temperature regulation
  • Excessive thirst
  • Increased urination

Prevention

  • Leaks in plumbing or other structures that lead to moisture buildup should be identified and repaired.
  • Areas of leakage and water damage in the home should be cleaned and dried within 24-48 hours.
  • Use of an air conditioner or air dehumidifier during humid seasons can help reduce the potential for moisture build-up.
  • Avoid the use of carpets in humid basements and bathrooms.
  • Using fans and maintaining good ventilation in the home can also help prevent or control dampness.
  • Mold inhibitor products can be added to household paints.
  • Keep indoor humidity low (ideally between 30%-50%).
  • Use bathroom fans or open bathroom windows when showering.
