You must surely have heard his name or music somewhere. His tracks are intense, full of emotions and vibes. Hans Nayna, musician, singer and songwriter aged 27 is the current music sensation. He is touring the island to present his new album entitled ‘Music for the Soul.’ Despite his busy schedule, Hans found some time to speak about his new album and more with News on Sunday. Inhabitant of the village of Grand Bel Air, Hans says that he has always loved to sing since his young age. “I knew music was present in my blood long before I started doing it. I always loved to sing, along with mum or alone in the kitchen when I was younger. My few tries in vocal/music contest during college years were unsuccessful. That’s why I started late. A couple of years after my Higher School Certificate at St-Joseph’s college, at the crossroads between adolescence and real life, I came across a guitar and wrote my first song. That’s how it all started, with that one song. Today, I am driven by the same energy and will power I had composing that first song,” shares the singer. Speaking of his motivation and inspiration, Hans believes that motivation comes from within while confiding that the international artists he listens to strongly inspire him. “They are from all over the world, I learn from them –Paolo Nutini, Sia, Coldplay, Adele, Fat Freddy to name a few.” Adding “what’s amazing about music is that you’re never alone. This one man, Damien Bathurst, who is always behind the show, working hard to promote music in Mauritius has, since we met, been dreaming with me. He never lets me down and believes as much as I do that somehow, somewhat, something is going to happen.” For the Mauritian singer “music is a tool, a weapon and a shield. It can deliver messages, it can create tension and it can unite people.” The songs in his new album have been written during different periods of his life. But what is ‘Music for the Soul’ all about? “This new album is about me, my deep feelings, my dreams and targets, my convictions and motivations, my state of mind and my wish. My soul,” he confides. Music is some kind of science that requires research, trials and experiments, believes the singer. “Also, music is kind of magic. Amazing how songs come to life, starting from nothing, finding melodies then writing the lyrics, feeding with energy and full focus. Music is the expression of the soul in a Universal language nobody learned, that we all know,” he states. Hans trusts that it is not difficult to become a musician but it’s difficult to earn a living as a musician in Mauritius. Are local talents and music promoted enough? “Nothing is done for music! We don’t have any facilities provided, no free platforms to perform – instead they are trying to close them down like the BazArt. It is heart breaking to see gifted musicians and singers lose their faith in music because nothing is done to help or guide them,” he underlines. The musician trusts that much could be done. “We need people who love and understand arts to deal with the promotion of music,” argues Hans. He advises young Mauritian talents to hold on to their dream and work hard to achieve it. “Once you have something in mind, stick to it, work at it, work hard and be confident that in the end, things can only happen the way you dreamed it.” Hans Nayna seizes the opportunity to thank the talented and hard working musicians that gave their best for his album namely Emmanuelle Ghem, Christophe Bertin, Josian Long, Fabien Thomas, Bryan Armoogum, Yann Payet, Emmanuel Desroches, Jean Lou Arlanda, Jean Michel Ah Young, Dario Ramdeal, Michael Nicholas and Nitish Boojhawon.
