At the age of 19, Hans Dax can surely be proud of what he has achieved so far. Internationally acclaimed make-up artist and law student at Aberystwyth University, this guy does has set numerous goals.
At first, Hans confesses that he wanted to study medicine and become a doctor. With time, this former student of the Sir Abdool Raman Osman State College changed his plans and swapped for art subjects by studying Literature and Sociology. 14 year-old Hans then discovered a real passion for the make-up and fashion world by watching the famous American show ‘America’s Next Top Model’ presented by model Tyra Banks. Hans claims: “America’s Next Model was a epiphany and has inspired me to launch into the make-up artist career!”
Hans admits that he has never followed any course in make-up so far, but intends to enroll for an international expertise. He acquired his knowledge all on his own. As a novice make-up artist, he started his first experience during his downtime by using his relatives as ‘human guinea pigs’ to practise the art of embellishing faces. “I noticed that make-up could transform a face. A few small brush strokes and here is a more confident and radiant person that appears in the mirror,” declares Hans.
This power to metamorphose faces has pushed the young Hans to increase his meager knowledge in the make-up field by watching tutorials on YouTube. He always put into practice whatever he learnt on the net and reinvented his own styles. As soon as he has acquired the necessary knowledge, the young man aimed at showing of what mettle he was made of. Proud of his works, he decided to post them on Facebook. The talent of the prodigious 16-year-old was then noticed by Carine Jean and Kendy Mangra from MBC and the young guy collaborated with the two for their shows ‘Lavi zoli en xxl’ and ‘Lot koté atlas’ respectively. This is how fame knocked at his door. Since then, he encountered a lot of success and has been much in demand. “Everywhere, people used to stop me and asked whether I was the guy on the shows. And I said ‘Yes, it’s me’,” he says with a sense of pride. He later worked with famous photographers and kept on climbing the ladder of success in the fashion field. Today, he offers training on make-up by organising workshops.
Despite his young age, Hans Dax has a lot of achievements under his belt: “At the age of 18, I was nominated twice among the best make-up artists in Mauritius. Once, for the Fashion Week organised by Heat and L’Oréal Paris and another for the Backstage Awards 2016. I have also organised three make-up shows, such as Strike a Poz, Illumination and Quintessence. I worked with local celebrities such as Laura Beg and Zulu.” Nonetheless, the great and incredible accomplishment of Hans has taken place in March. The latter flew to India and Egypt where he was the only Mauritian make-up artist in the team for Miss Eco International. “This was a great exciting and memorable experience. I met Misses from Brazil, Venezuela, USA, France, Canada and African countries,” claims Hans. Surely, this young man with golden fingers has a lot to offer to the world. His future projects are Miss Universe Mauritius and many more.
Though he has encountered surprising success and is now very well-known, Hans regrets that the fashion industry is too closed and restricted in Mauritius. Thinking about how he started out, he admits that it was not that easy at all. “With the difficult emergence of this industry in Mauritius and its competitors, it is really not easy to achieve a breakthrough in this field. However, I had the advantage of being a man. So far, there are three to four well-known male make-up artists on the island.”
When asked about the new generation, Hans points out he noticed that young people have a lot of potential. He will only give them the advice to believe in their dreams and never give up. “Youngsters should dream and work hard and struggle so that their goals are achieved and that they are no more dreams but achievements,” he added wisely.
