However, in 1874, the factory shut down due to its remote location. From that year onwards, its harvest was processed at the Bel Ombre sugar mill. Cane cultivation continued until the early 2000’s, when an extensive reforestation programme started and Frederica Nature Reserve was created. Frederica’s chimney still stands majestically in the middle of the lush vegetation as a testimony of the past. Today, the 1,300 hectares reserve is full of wild virginal landscapes. From sugar cane fields on the coastline to green higher lands and valleys with enchanting waterfalls and streams, Frederica is teeming with life. While Java deers gracefully parade in the vast lower plains, the upper wetlands shelter a great number of rare plants and birds.
