Krishna Ramasawmy: “The monthly stipend could be increased”

Krishna, former student at Royal College of Port- Louis was ranked 3rd in science side for HSC 2015. Currently, he is studying Neuroscience at the University of Bristol in UK. “I am thankful to the government for giving me the opportunity to study abroad. I bagged the State scholarship. I am totally covered for the tuition fees and receive a monthly stipend of 637 pounds. However, it would be greatly appreciated if the monthly allowance can be increased since they do not cover all of our expenses including food,” he said.

Neha Dhoonooah: “The allowance is not enough”

Neha Dhoonooah, former student at QEC was ranked 3rd in the science side in 2010. She went to Imperial College of London to study physics. According to her, as she was on the main list, the tuition fees were fully covered by the government. “Being on the main list, I had an advantage as compared to those who were in the additional list. For the accommodation, it was a bit tight for students like me who studied in London. As far as I know, the allowance of £750 per month that we used to received has not changed over the past ten years. But there wasn’t much left from the allowance then, so our parents had to top up the allowance. However, for additional laureates, the tuition fees paid by the government are not enough at all, and some of them can’t afford to go abroad. In terms of the living allowance, the standard of living has definitely gone up. It is a bit unfair to pay the same allowance to students in London, as compared to other cities in the UK for example. London is much more expensive and students spend almost all their allowance on paying the rent only,” she explains.
