With a score of 50 on the Corruption Perception Index, Mauritius is now ranked 54th in the world out of 180 countries. It is ranked sixth in Africa behind Botswana, Seychelles, Cape Verde, Rwanda and Namibia. In 2016, Maurice scored 54 points and was ranked at the 50th position. Since 2012, Mauritius has seen its score drop by seven points, from 57 to 50 and 43rd in the world rank of 54th.

Transparency International relied on data from five international sources to justify these scores. These sources include the Bertelsmann Foundation Transformation Index, the Global Insight Country Risk Ratings, the Varieties of Democracy Project, the Economist Intelligence Unit Country Ratings, and the World Economic Forum Executive Opinion Survey (EOS).
The Varieties of Democracy Project (VDP) scored the worst in Mauritius. In addition to focusing on the electoral system of countries, it also analyzes citizen space and the ability of governments to consult civil society.
Since last year, Transparency Mauritius has been emphasizing the need for the government not to operate in opacity but to open up to dialogue with the various actors of civil and private societies. Thus, this year, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice and the Director of Transparency Mauritius discussed the possibilities of exchange and transfer of methods of good governance.
Among other recommendations, Transparency International insists that attacks on the press by governments around the world are poorly viewed and is a factor that discourages international donors. Freedom of the press, freedom of expression and the free flow of information are essential elements in the formulation of perceptions on corruption and bad governance.
For 2017, 180 countries have been evaluated. The index is articulated through a score from zero to 100 where the zero shows a higher rate of corruption. Mauritius is part of a group of 62 countries where the scores have taken a downward turn.
