Rama Valayden, Senior Counsel, has drafted a proposed amendment to Section 12 of the Constitution to introduce Freedom of Information in Mauritius. The draft was prepared in 2022 for Linion Moris, and Valayden is now calling for a national debate on the issue.
He points out that successive political parties regularly promise to introduce Freedom of Information, yet consistently fail to deliver. He is therefore urging the current government to act as soon as possible.
“If there is genuine political will to bring this before the National Assembly of Mauritius, I am ready to prepare the rules and regulations, as well as a code of conduct for all parties,” he said.
Below is the proposed amendment to Section 12 of the Constitution.
