Best trekking and hiking in Mauritius : discover Mauritius through the unbeaten tracks

For adventure lovers and those looking for some great leisure time together with their family and friends, trekking and hiking are the best ways to enjoy yourselves while discovering the beauties of Mauritius. Here are some of the best trekking and hiking sites which will offer you breathtaking moments.

Publicité

We may be in winter but there is no season for trekking and hiking. Instead of putting your toes in the cold sea water, gear up for some thrilling times in the most beautiful green landscapes of Mauritius. Mountains, valleys, mountain flanks, endemic forests, rivers, waterfalls, canyons, among others, are the ultimate way for you to not only enjoy great leisure activities during winter but also to discover a different facet of the island. Whether you choose a half day trek or a full day hike, trust us, the gorgeous views and sense of reward at the end is definitely worth it. So grab your jacket, hats, sun screen, water bottle, good hiking shoes and set on an exciting discovery excursion in the wilderness.

However, note that if it has been raining on the eve of your activity, take precautions while hiking. Paths may be slippery and you need to watch your steps. Bring also rain coats and jackets along. If you plan to go with a large group of people including young teens, you can book for a professional tour guide for extra security. Some operators such as Vertical World Outdoor Adventures and Yanature offer tour guide facilities.

Le Pouce

It is the third highest mountain of Mauritius, at 812 metres. Le Pouce Mountain is located in the northwest of the island and is found in the Moka Range. It offers great hiking activities both for the youth as well as for adults as the trek is considered an easy one. However, note that the ascent is very steep, especially near the iconic ‘thumb’. You can reach the mountain from Moka or Port Louis. The views at the top of the thumb are breathtaking.

Black River gorges National Park

Located in the southwest of Mauritius, the Black River Gorges National Park offers many hiking and trekking options. Nesting one of the most preserved and lush forest of Mauritius, the National Park extends over an area of 6,754 hectares. The park, managed by the National Parks and Conservation Service, is home to many endemic plants and animals such as the Mauritius Kestrel and the pink pigeon. You will definitely enjoy the amazing views and also have a swim in the refreshing river.

Le Morne Brabant

Access to Le Morne Brabant Mountain has been reopened to the public since 24 July. Located in the South Western tip of Mauritius, the mountain is classified as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. Rising over 556 metres above sea level, the magnificent high point offers breathtaking and flawless views on Mauritius’s nature sceneries. The 3.5 kilometres of trail offers spectacular views on the turquoise sea of the south western coast.

The Tamarind Falls (Sept Cascades)

This is one of the MUST hikes that you should add on your list if you want some total immersion in the island's most beautiful forest. The Tamarind Falls, also known as the Sept Cascades, is found in the southwest of the island, near the village of Henrietta. Originating from Rivière Tamarin, it has seven gorgeous waterfalls. With its many ponds, you can take a refreshing swim. It is known as the highest waterfall in Mauritius with a total height (or depth) of 293 metres. If you have never gone trekking at Tamarind Falls, it is recommended not to go on your own. Better go with someone who is experienced or a guide.

Machabée Forest

This National Park offers panoramic views on the native forests and onto the sea. You will have the opportunity to discover a dense forest where you can come across endangered birds like the echo Parakeet. You will then descend to the lip of a gorgeous waterfall cascading down towards Rivière Noire. Start your hike at Pétrin Entrance to Black River. As you leave Pétrin Visitor’s Centre, get along the main trail into the park. You will see clear signs. You just have to follow them for Machabée Forest Loop.
