There are places we visit, and then there are places that stay with us, quietly, deeply, long after the journey ends. For Belle Maree, a young Australian teacher turned digital nomad, Mauritius has become exactly that: not just a destination, but a feeling shaped by people, moments, and meaning.
“I’ve absolutely fallen in love with Mauritius,” she says. “The people, the food, the culture, everything here has been so special. This place has truly left a mark on me.” Her journey into this life of travel began with a simple yet transformative experience. During her school holidays in 2024, Belle travelled to Bali, where she volunteered as an English teacher in a local village. What she found there reshaped her path entirely. It was not just a love for travel that emerged, but a deeper realisation that teaching remained central to who she was.
Determined to hold on to both passions, she transitioned into teaching online - allowing her to continue her career while exploring the world. Since then, Belle has travelled to 14 countries. Yet among them all, Mauritius stands apart. “Mauritius stands out in a very unique way. There is a depth to the culture and a warmth in the people that feels different from anywhere else I have been.”
What draws her to a place is not simply its beauty, but the life it offers: food, culture, community, and the rhythm of coastal living. In Mauritius, she found all of these elements coming together naturally, without effort or pretence.
Belle’s connection to the island began not through planned experiences, but through a moment of pure spontaneity.
On Easter Day, at Belle Mare beach, a coincidence that now feels almost poetic she stepped into a scene that was alive with togetherness. Families had gathered along the shoreline, cooking, singing, and celebrating in a way that felt both intimate and open. Then came an unexpected invitation. “A family invited us over. They offered us food, a place to sit, and welcomed us into their celebration.”
What followed was not just an encounter, but an immersion, sharing food, laughter, music, and dance. It was a moment where cultural boundaries dissolved, replaced by warmth and inclusion. That same family later welcomed her into their home, where the connection deepened over hours of conversation and shared stories. But it was the farewell that left the strongest impression. “The hugs we shared at the end of the night were so genuine and full of warmth.”
It was a simple gesture, yet one that carried a depth rarely found in fleeting travel experiences.
Beyond human connection, Mauritius revealed itself to Belle through its food, a vibrant reflection of its history and diversity.
From street food to home-cooked meals, every dish became a window into the island’s identity. The flavours told stories of different cultures blending together, not in contrast, but in harmony. “It highlights the diversity of the island, but also the unity within it, which I find very special.”
Through food and conversation, she began to understand Mauritius not just as a destination, but as a living, evolving culture shaped by many influences.
Not all defining experiences are loud or celebratory. Some unfold quietly, leaving a lasting imprint in their simplicity.
During a hike through the island’s lush landscapes, Belle encountered locals who shared fruit they had picked along the way. There was no expectation, no exchange, just a spontaneous act of kindness. Set against the backdrop of Mauritius’ natural beauty, the moment became something more than scenic. It became meaningful. It was in these small, unspoken gestures that she discovered the true character of the island.
As someone who shares her journey online, Belle is mindful of the balance between documenting experiences and truly living them. Rather than capturing everything in real time, she allows herself to be present, often reflecting and creating content afterwards.
With the help of her boyfriend, who enjoys photography and filming, she is able to preserve memories without losing herself in the process. The approach is intentional, grounded in the belief that not every moment needs to be immediately shared to be meaningful.
Despite a life defined by movement, Mauritius offered Belle something unexpectedly familiar. The rhythm of daily life: simple, balanced, and close to nature, mirrored aspects of home in Australia. Days settled into a gentle routine of work, beach, and shared meals. Yet within that simplicity was a deeper sense of ease, a feeling of belonging that is not always easy to find while travelling.
The island, in many ways, became a home away from home.
Rethinking What Truly Matters
More than anything, her time in Mauritius has prompted reflection.
Observing families gathered on beaches, fully present with one another, sharing meals and moments without distraction, left a lasting impression. “It has shaped how I think about my own future and the kind of family life I hope to create one day.” It is a quiet realisation, yet a powerful one - shifting her perspective on what success and happiness might truly look like.
After travelling across 14 countries, Mauritius has managed to do something rare - it has stayed with her. “It has shown me the importance of unity, openness, and embracing others, regardless of where they come from.” It is this sense of connection, genuine, unfiltered, and deeply human that defines her experience of the island. And it is why, when she speaks of returning, there is no hesitation.
Mauritius is no longer just another place she has visited. It is a place she carries with her.
