‘On the way to school’ contest

It is with much pride that the Rampersad Goburdhun Government School of Belle Vue Maurel received the grand prize of the inter-school road safety competition organised by Vivo Energy Mauritius as part of the Road Safety Day 2017 of the Cité Zen campaign. The big winner of the competition, Kalaivaani Eroosen, was awarded Rs 50,000 for her school rehabilitation project.

The national competition, divided in two phases, began with an individual test among Grades 4 and 5 (Standard 4 and 5) students. Participants had to correctly answer a questionnaire on the road regulations and the courtesy of the road users. A random draw was done to designate one winner per school. A second draw was then held to select a winner from all the national ballots.

Entitled ‘On the way to school’ (Sur le Chemin de l’Ecole), the questionnaire aimed to captivate the interest of the young participant through a series of infographic charts that the latter had to unfold gradually to discover the questions. At the end of the questionnaire the students had to assemble letters to form the word: PRUDENCE. This playful and participative approach adopted by Vivo Energy Mauritius in line with its ‘Cité Zen’ campaign aims to encourage children and youngsters to become more conscious of their civic responsibility on the road.

“Our goal is to get young users to no longer be mere receivers of messages, to overcome the conditions that can prevent them from acting. We want to encourage them to have their own vision of what is at stake and to become real messengers, even role models for their elders,” said Belinda Teeroovengadum Ramtohul, Communications Manager of Vivo Energy Mauritius. She added that “road safety is today a great national cause that must not leave anyone insensitive.”

In previous editions, Vivo Energy Mauritius funded an environmental project at the Pandit Sahadeo Government School of Vacoas, namely a medicinal garden and an educational project at the Loreto Curepipe Junior School for modernising the computer room with new equipment.

Vivo Energy Mauritius' commitment to road safety awareness stems from a genuine safety management policy. For several years now, the company has implemented a comprehensive road safety program that aims to facilitate a change in road safety behaviour among its employees, its collaborators, the general public and children in particular. Vivo Energy Mauritius has been working closely with the Ministry of Education and Human Resources since 2013 to make primary school children aware of the importance of safety on our roads.
