Navin Ramgoolam appealed to youths to give a helping hand in the rebuilding of the country

Navin Ramgoolam

The leader of the Labour Party addressed a message to the nation on December 31st via the social network YouTube. Navin Ramgoolam recalled the various scandals that shook the government in 2017 and targeted the Prime Minister Pravind Juganuath. “The change is coming,” he stated. The former prime minister trusts that the results of the by-elections in Belle Rose/Quatres-Bornes won by Arvind Boolell, is an evidence of the change.

Navin Ramgoolam commented on the accession of Pravind Jugnauth as Prime Minister. “SAJ handed over the post of PM to his son without the people’s approval.” He trusts that it is nothing but “an imposture that has had catastrophic effect on the country.”

According to him, the government has a “disastrous record” and “the majority of citizens are facing difficulties in their everyday lives.” He deplored that the gap between rich and poor continues to widen and believes that the government is only giving to one side. “There is no more meritocracy, unless you are close to the family clan,” he uttered.

He further added that investors “no longer trust” Mauritius due to the BAI and Betamax affairs. Navin Ramgoolam also criticised the education reform of the Nine-Year Continuous Basic Education stating that it was introduced in a reckless manner. He foresees issues cropping at the start of the new academic year due to the reform.

The former prime minister also commented on the drug issue. According to him, the drug plague is ravaging the country. “There is not one day that passes by when we do not hear about violence, crime, or theft. Parents are shocked with the drug plague, especially the synthetic drugs.”

He stated that the Lam Shang Leen commission has demonstrated the proximity of drug barons to power. He mentioned the case of the Gambling Regulatory Authority and its former president Raouf Gulbul, who had to resign “after very serious allegations concerning drugs and political financing were made against him.” For Navin Ramgoolam, “it is clear that the drug mafia has seized the state.”

However, the leader of the Labour Party said that hope is there as the by-elections at constituency No.18 “rings the return of better tomorrow.” He trusts that the people have sanctioned the government for its betrayal and its incompetency.

“It’s a victory for our rainbow nation,” he said. Navin Ramgoolam trusts that the Labour Party can bring a real change “through a break with the past.” He appealed to the youths to “give a helping hand in the rebuilding of the country.”
