A 23-year old lady, Sanjeda grew up in Italy but recently returned to Mauritius and is now living in a small village called Camp de Masque Pavé with her grandparents. She is very attached to her roots and traditions. She believes that the mixture of cultures have moulded her personality.  One of the main challenges in her life today is living far from her parents and despite that, the feelings as well as the attachment remain the same and somehow the distance has made her stronger.

She has just completed her degree in sociology with specialisation in gender studies at the University of Mauritius and she would like to contribute towards the social development of Mauritius. Passionate about social development, cultural and empowerment initiatives, she hopes to actively stand for women and their empowerment on a local and international platform. “Little by little, I would like to help to bring more equality among men and women in society and make women realise that they have the potential to achieve their own dreams. This is why I participated in this  beauty pageant, as it is related to CANMA.”

Crowned as this year’s Miss India Worldwide Mauritius, the beauty queen calls it an honour and self satisfaction. “The happiest moment was seeing my father from UK. It made me feel proud to achieve my goal as a daughter.”

Title of Miss Humanity Hope

During this beauty pageant, she also bagged the title of Miss Humanity Hope award. It is another great achievement for her, as this award is mostly based on the way they conducted their cancer campaign presentation and this is a symbol of hope. Earlier, Sanjeda participated in the Miss University Of Mauritius in 2015 and she was among the five finalists and won the title of Miss Elegance. “Since childhood I always had the same dream, to be a strong independent woman.”

Overcoming her fears

The six months training have been very hard for the ravishing lady but still her determination and willpower kept her strong. “Our coaches have contributed to create who we are today. In my case, my public speaking coach Ravin Papiah has worked in such a way to boost my self-confidence. The fact that I have been living in Italy, my accent was totally different from other people, consequently I was always afraid to be judged by other people because of my accent. I had refused great opportunities only to avoid speaking in public. At the end he made me realise that no one is perfect and that each one of us is capable to overcome their limitations. He really helped me to overcome my fear.”

Her confidence level kept on boosting and she felt more comfortable in her own skin. “I was used to plan every single thing of my life and it was visible through the way I was doing my catwalk, I was very rigid, and my coach Poonoosamy Niren Rajnissen  made me realise that if I plan too much, I will never be able to enjoy my present.”
