The importation of sodium glutamate, commonly known as Ajinomoto, will be banned in Mauritius.
This was announced by the Minister of Trade and Industry, Ashit Gungah, in response to a question from MP Zouberr Joomaye at the National Assembly. Ashit Gungah has, however, emphasized that this prohibition will not apply to imported foods that contain this substance. The Minister conceded that Ajinomoto contains sodium, which can prove to be a ‘silent killer.’ Ashit Gungah stressed that this substance has an effect on hypertension, which already affects more than 240,000 adults in Mauritius.
